Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the Crimean Tatar theme in the artistic heritage of the outstanding painter Ivan Aivazovsky. While traditionally celebrated worldwide primarily as an unsurpassed master of marine art, Aivazovsky also made a significant contribution to the visual documentation of the history, culture, architecture, and everyday life of the indigenous people of Crimea. The research explores a wide range of the artist’s works, shifting the art historical focus to include his detailed genre scenes, architectural depictions, and landscapes enriched with the vibrant presence of Crimean Tatars. The author systematically examines paintings that feature traditional Crimean Tatar coffee houses, festive gatherings, oxcarts in the steppe, and daily activities on the shores of the Black Sea. Furthermore, the study pays special attention to Aivazovsky’s accurate and empathetic depictions of significant historical and cultural locations, such as the views of Feodosiia, local mosques, and traditional coastal villages nestled in the mountains. The article emphasizes that Aivazovsky, having been born and having spent the majority of his life in the multicultural environment of this region, possessed a profound, intuitive understanding of the local way of life. This organic connection to this place allowed him to capture the authentic spirit of the Crimean Tatar people with a level of ethnographic precision that went far beyond the Orientalism popular in 19th-century European art. The methodological basis of the research includes formal- stylistic and contextual analysis, which helps to trace the evolution of the Crimean Tatar motif throughout different periods of the artist’s career. From early sketches to mature canvases, Aivazovsky consistently demonstrated a deep respect for the architectural heritage and the harmonious coexistence of the indigenous people with the natural environment of the peninsula. The scientific novelty of this paper lies in the systematization and holistic evaluation of Aivazovsky’s artworks through the lens of the multifaceted life of the Crimean Tatar nation. The research expands the traditional perception of Aivazovsky, highlighting his crucial role not only as a Romantic marine painter but also as a dedicated chronicler of the cultural and historical landscape of Crimea.
